Applying for a patent

For applications to the UK Patent Office (UKPO), the UKPO has a summary page listing the various resources available, including a “How to apply for a patent" page, which has links to some funding resources and more technical information on the presentation of a patent application.

For applications to the United States of America Patent Office (USPO), the USPO has a summary page listing the various resources available, including a “How to apply for a patent” page, which will link the user to the appropriate pages.

The Chartered Institute of Patent Agents (CIPA) offer on a regular basis, in a number of cities, free basic advice clinics to innovators who are at the early stage of developing an idea. The following cities are covered: Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield. Appointments need to be booked. Also some patent agents provide an initial free consultation if there is not a clinic close to an innovator.
