The Nuffield Council on Bioethics, founded by the Nuffield Foundation considers the ethical issues arising from developments in medicine and biology, and its home page is found here.

The Bioindustry Association represents biosicence organisations in the United Kingdom and its home page can be found here. The site provides a glossary of terms found in this industry.

The Biotechnology Industry Organisation represents biotechnology companies and organisations, and although based in the USA, has an international membership. Their web site can be found here. There is also a “Guide to Biotechnology” which can be read on-line or downloaded in PDF format (right-click to download), and covers such subjects as “What is Biotechnology”, “Cells and Biological Molecules” and “Ethics”.

The Biotechnology Information Directory Section is a portal containing “well over 1500 URLs of companies, research institutes, universities, sources of information and other directories specific to biotechnology, pharmaceutical development and related fields. It places emphasis on product development and the delivery of products and services” and can be found here. The web site is provided/sponsored by Cato Research.

The Human Genetics Commission is the UK Government's advisory body on new developments in human genetics and how such developments will impact on people and on health care, and its web site can be found here.

The Human Genome Organisation’s mission is to

  • promote international discussion and collaboration on scientific issues and topics crucial to the progress of the world-wide human genome initiative in order that the analysis of the human genome can be achieved as rapidly and effectively as possible.
  • To promote the scientific study of the human genome, including the identification and functional analysis of the human genes, and encourage the free flow of information unconstrained by individual, industrial or national interest.
  • To provide a global forum for addressing the scientific, medical, ethical, legal, social and commercial issues raised by the handling and use of genome knowledge.

They have published a set of statements on such matters as: the Patenting of DNA Sequences; on Cloning, on DNA Sampling: Control and Access; on the Principled Conduct of Genetics Research. Their home page is found here
