Our approach

We have some reservations about saying that we are different from most law firms, and that we are much more client-focussed and user-friendly than our competitors.

Our reservation is that, nowadays, most law firms say just the same thing.

What we mean by being client-focussed, is understanding how our clients approach legal issues and how they make use of legal advice. We are trained to be lawyers, not commercial or technical specialists. We closely analyse words and situations; we consider the legal implications of what is being proposed and said; being thorough is an important part of our professional toolkit.

These qualities can be of vital assistance to our clients, whether in negotiations or litigation. But they are not necessarily the main priorities of a commercial client. Sometimes, the client may be trying to build a consensus (whether internally within his or her organisation, or with external parties) or balance competing priorities.

Sometimes, the priority may be to “get the deal done”; at other times, a more considered risk assessment of all options may be required. Sometimes, cost is no object and what is important is getting it right; at other times, it may be a marginal decision whether to involve lawyers at all, and the last thing that is wanted is a heavy-handed legalistic approach.

Our experience as in-house lawyers is of great assistance to us in seeing things from the client's point of view. From time to time we are involved in instructing law firms, both in the UK and overseas, and we see just how frustrated our commercial client sometimes is with the approach that is taken by the external firm. (At other times, we see it from the law firm's point of view, and try to help our client to understand their perspective.)

Seeing things from the client’s point of view, whilst not compromising our independence and the need to give objective advice, is a hard-learnt skill. It is one that we all have to keep practising.
